TURING'S OPTIMISM. "The prospect of Artificial Intelligence was raised as an issue for the general public from the very start, stimulated by the success of wartime science technology. In 1949 the brain surgeon Geoffrey Jefferson spoke out against it in a lecture 'The Mind of Mechanical Man'. In response, Turing told the London Times that 'their research would be directed to finding out... to what extent [the machine] could think for itself.' TURING TEST. "Turing put forward the idea of an 'imitation game', in which a human being and a computer would be interrogated under conditions where the interrogator would not know which was which ... if the interrogator could not distinguish them by questioning, then it would be unreasonable not to call the computer intelligent." http://www.turing.org.uk/scrapbook/test.html View in LinkedIn

THE BRILLIANT AND TRAGIC TURING. "Turing's pivotal role in cracking intercepted coded messages enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis in many crucial engagements, including the Battle of the Atlantic ... Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts, when such behaviour was still criminalised in the UK. He accepted treatment with oestrogen injections (chemical castration) as an alternative to prison." https://lnkd.in/eT3AD4p View in LinkedIn

NOT MUCH SUNLIGHT NEEDED. "It takes relatively little sunlight exposure to acquire adequate stores of vitamin D and few people wear enough clothes to prevent that from happening. Ten to 15 min of sunlight or daylight exposure to a small area of skin (e.g., the forearm or face, etc.) twice a week, without sunscreen, supplies all the vitamin D necessary for health." Assuming your D system is functioning normally. https://lnkd.in/dDKztC5 View in LinkedIn

SUNSCREEN MYTH. "The belief that sunscreen lotion blocks vitamin D production is based on a 1987 study done by Matsuoka et al., that was funded by the ultraviolet foundation, which is supported by the tanning bed industry. Contradictory information was provided by Diehl and Chiu which concluded that although sunscreens are effective, many may not actually be blocking UV-B because they are improperly or inadequately applied." https://lnkd.in/dDKztC5 View in LinkedIn

ADEQUATE SKIN CAPACITY. "As the skin ages, there is a decline in the cutaneous levels of 7-dehydrocholesterol, resulting in a marked reduction of the skin’s capacity to produce vitamin D3. However, despite the up to fourfold reduction in vitamin D3 production in a 70-year-old compared to a 20-year-old, the skin has such a high capacity to make vitamin D3 that elders exposed to sunlight will produce an adequate amount of vitamin D3 to satisfy their vitamin D requirement." https://lnkd.in/dDKztC5 View in LinkedIn

BEYOND BONE HEALTH. "The classic function of vitamin D is to enhance intestinal absorption of calcium by regulating several calcium transport proteins in the small intestine." Now we realize that this complex molecule acts also on the nuclear genes rather like a hormone. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2861286/ View in LinkedIn
