“1. Catalunya, and Spain, suffered for decades under the Franco dictatorship, and after his death, about 30 years ago, the country, and especially Catalunya has blossomed: Barcelona is a destination city, the Catalan language has re-emerged, and it is the site of an immense blossoming in design and culinary expertise: El Bulli was the top restaurant in the world, a Catalan creation.

“2. The Crisis is real, but the decades of investment by the Catalan goverment in building infrastructure — Science Parks, and in building a base for entrepreneuring — grants and loans, as well as private sector activities (VCs) has today yielded fruit. This IS an emerging Silicon Valley for entrepreneuring.

“3. The concept that Spaniards are lazy simply is not true. These entrepreneurs work just as hard as their counterparts in the rest of the world.

“4. We have BIG lessons to learn about an emerging biopharma industry from the US, Singapore, Japan, Korea, China, India, Britain, and the UAE, among others. Those of you who participated in those early years PLEASE weigh in and share your observations.

“5. For those interested, the Catalan goverment organizatioon has done a great job in collecting data. Please see www.biocat.cat. The following data was provided by that website.
