MIR AND SPACE STATIONS NEED HIGHLY STERILE WATER, but even under these rigorous sanitization conditions... "water from condensation in the Mir space station, bacteria were abundant (10(4) bacteria/mL) and dominated by Gram-negative bacteria ... And two new species were also discovered." New species! http://lnkd.in/dG5Zr_Y View in LinkedIn

SPACE AGENCIES are particularly sensitive to the issues of biofilms for health and bio- contamination reasons, and go to extreme cleaning protocols in their very defined and aseptic environments to try and ensure sterility. This controlled microcosm is emblematic of the larger problems faced by giant and degrading infrastructures servicing homes. View in LinkedIn

BIOFILMS ARE THE NORM. "In 2000, as a case example, nearly 7,000 US municipal drinking water systems affecting 10.5 million inhabitants failed to meet safe water criteria, on account of biofilms in the distribution systems." These are not rare data at all, and point to a systemic problem facing all large drinking water distribution systems. http://lnkd.in/dVYaBDT View in LinkedIn

BACTERIA IN TWO DRINKING WATER SYSTEMS. "A total of 16,576 samples ... with 1416 isolates analysed. A low number of coliform occurrences were observed (2%) ... There was a high diversity among these populations ... Klebsiella oxytoca was the most commonly detected species ... seven other enterobacterial genera were also found." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17309620 View in LinkedIn

"BACTERIA IN (HOSPITAL)WATER DISTRIBUTION TANKS were found to be resistant to a number of agents, and moreover, that while Pseudomonas is rarely a cause of infection in normal circumstances, were accounting for up to 20% of infections in hospital gastrointestinal patients within 72 hours of admission, when using this water source." http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2458/2/13 View in LinkedIn

CHLORAMINE AND CHLORINE REMOVAL. "You can quickly and easily remove the chloramine from your drinking water simply by adding vitamin C to the water. You just need to add 10 mg of vitamin C to neutralize each liter of water." Certain activated carbon filter will also suffice. Chlorine is removed by letting water stand24 hours. http://lnkd.in/dt83k3w View in LinkedIn

PURE WATER MYTH. "Nearly all large water purification systems can cause the formation of biofilm in the piping. This biofilm can spread microorganisms within the system and contribute to an increase in particles, bacteria, and the level of total organic carbon (TOC). Contamination can affect the whole process in the pharmaceutical industry or hospital environment." http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2458/2/13 View in LinkedIn

ANECDOTAL STORY ABOUT IBS AND CHLORINE. "My irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) was greatly improved when I left the UK and visited Paris. I had considered many possible explanations for this, but had yet to find an answer ... I discovered that my local water utility company puts chloramine (as well as chlorine) in my tap drinking water." http://lnkd.in/dt83k3w View in LinkedIn
