NEGATIVE REFRACTIVE INDEX. “The refractive index determines the amount by which the beam is deflected. If the index is positive, the exiting beam is deflected to the opposite side of the surface normal, whereas if the index is negative, the exiting beam is deflected the same side of the normal.” Throw out the old textbooks!
