Certain TFs, termed “pioneer factors,” can find their target sites even in closed chromatin and may “bookmark” these sites during mitosis. It is likely that selector proteins and kernel TFs, as well as proteins that can reprogram cell fate autonomously, have pioneer qualities.” (TF = transcription factors).
