MEASURING OUTCOMES MATTERS as Bill Gates rightly points out in this essay. Measurement is a cornerstone of science. Verifiable and measurable outcomes are also key to the entrepreneurial venture. How do you know your innovation has bern successful? Customers have bought it. That simple. Be eager to find early surrogate or predictive measures of outcomes, such as detailed customer surveys. These are powerful tools for olanning and revising your business. http://lnkd.in/fyCif7 View in LinkedIn

DO YOU DREAM OF FIXING THE WORLD'S PROBLEMS LIKE BILL GATES? Every entrepreneur is in business because he or she has filled an unmet need, and solved some problem that customers care about. Not all of these save lives, or end poverty. But I am of the opinion that cumulatively, each innovation is another tool in the toolbox. The iPhone did not meet an unmet need, (except fir Hitchhiker's Guide fans) but may have created a need we never knew about. Regardless, as a multifaceted tool, it will do great things on this planet, and has opened unlimited possibilities. http://lnkd.in/fyCif7 View in LinkedIn

THE HEALTHCARE REVOLUTION IS HERE. Our generation is seeing more innovation in medicine than the past several hundred years. The invention of public sewage systems may have saved more lives than any other single advance in medicine except vaccines, and antibiotics. These were arguably the big advances in the relatively recent past. But today, with the power of the Human Genome Project, we have entered a new age of medical innovation, as this article amply illustrates. Investors, get behind these innovations and be part of the future! http://lnkd.in/4UQTWM View in LinkedIn

A MUST READ FOR ENTREPRENEURS. 95% of us are not of the right temperament to start companies, and possibly 85% are not of the right temperament to work in them. Think carefully about your wants and needs, and about your personality. Be realistic, because a wrong choice can be both painful and costly. http://lnkd.in/VXJHkS View in LinkedIn

ALL INNOVATIONS GO INTO THE PLANET'S TOOLBOX WITH UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES. Marie Curie - nuclear bombs - advanced cancer treatments; the "information highway" (Al Gore) - distance leaning - new warfare platforms; GPS - map free driving - precision bombing; and so on. It is not possible to anticipate the future uses of any innovation, but the likelihood is it will be both far-reaching and bivalent. Once learned, it is also impossible to take it out of the box. A VALUABLE READ FOR B-SCHOOL ASPIRANTS. Don't also forget that hands-on experience is the most valuable training your can get, if you can get it. "Been there, done that" trumps "I studied it". But however you get your MBA, continue to read and learn as a lifelong habit. http://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/global-mba-ranking-2013 View in LinkedIn
