IVF: An estimated five million children worldwide have been born using IVF since 1978 when Robert G Edwards and Patrick Steptoe first fertilized an egg outside a woman's body and lef to the birth of Louis Brown, the first test tube baby. Edwards received the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this remarkable achievement. But Edwards was active in the UK Eugenics Society, and was keen to reframe Eugenics away from the ugly Nazi aspirations or state-sponsored schemes to a concept of individual choice. NEXT-GEN TEST TUBE BABY, Connor Levy, born in May 2013. "The new sequencing technique allows researchers to examine each embryo created with IVF for abnormal numbers of chromosomes, individual gene mutations, and mitochondrial genome mutations. The analysis can be completed in only 16 hours, meaning embryos do not need to be frozen awaiting test outcomes. CHEAP IVF: "European and American scientists say a simplified version of the entire procedure aimed at developing countries could be done for about 200 euros ($265) with generic fertility drugs and basic lab equipment that would fit inside a shoebox." 100 women have been treated to date versus $13,359 when done privately. CHEAP IVF GENETIC PRESCREEN of candidate embryos had been successfully launched. "It gives us a very, very powerful tool for examining pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and gives us increased confidence when looking at multiple genetic abnormalities in a human embryo. Screening of embryos in IVF is currently reserved for older women, who are at increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities, and those with recurrent miscarriages."" IVF CONTROVERSY: "The first test tube baby was born July 25th, 1978. Louise Brown was called the “baby of the century” by some and a “moral abomination” by others... it was her doctors who came under fire for their new fertility treatment—in vitro fertilization (or IVF).
