BLACK HOLE JETS. “Most surrounding matter gets sucked in, but some particles escape just moments before they are captured and are blown far out into space. These bright jets of energy and matter are one of the galaxy’s most mysterious features. Researchers suspect the jets are launched and shaped by magnetic fields, but the evidence for this is limited.” https://lnkd.in/gi_HdcX View in LinkedIn

SIGNATURES. “Since the PBH evaporation rate depends only on the mass of the hole and the assumed particle physics model, PBHs in similar astrophysical environments should produce similar radiation signatures; the ultimate “standard candles.” (PBHs = primordial black holes). https://lnkd.in/dggABMY View in LinkedIn

VISITORS. “The study of 'Oumuamua in October of 2017 set off a revolution in astronomy and the study of celestial objects. According to a new study led by researchers from the Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is), roughly seven ISOs enter our Solar System every year and follow predictable orbits while they are here.” (ISO = interstellar objects). https://lnkd.in/gBdkUgE View in LinkedIn

FRAGMENT FROM NATURE features an article entitled Remnants of an Ancient Metabolism without Phosphate, by Joshua E.Goldford et al. This is a brilliant analysis using computer modeling of metabolic pathways; even forty five years ago, when I was a graduate student, such tools were essentially unknown in biochemistry. Just like in many aspects of astronomy, probing the evolution of metabolism largely relies on sophisticated theoretical modeling. https://lnkd.in/dcwZe7b View in LinkedIn

THE QUESTION. “Phosphate is essential for all living systems, serving as a building block of genetic and metabolic machinery. However, it is unclear how phosphate could have assumed these central roles on primordial Earth, given its poor geochemical accessibility.” https://lnkd.in/dcwZe7b View in LinkedIn

THE APPROACH. “Could systems biology approaches help achieve a more systematic and quantitative understanding of the biosynthetic potential of a putative pre-phosphate metabolic network? Is it at all possible that a phosphate-independent geochemical setting could support the emergence of a rich and complex organized biochemistry?” https://lnkd.in/dcwZe7b View in LinkedIn
