WATER TREATMENT PLANT EFFLUENT: "50% of all the network samples contained more than 1.06×10(5) cells mL−1. PURE WATER MYTH. "Nearly all large water purification systems can cause the formation of biofilm in the piping. This biofilm can spread microorganisms within the system and contribute to an increase in particles, bacteria, and the level of total organic carbon (TOC). BACTERIA IN TWO DRINKING WATER SYSTEMS. "A total of 16,576 samples ... with 1416 isolates analysed. A low number of coliform occurrences were observed (2%) ... There was a high diversity among these populations ... BIOFILMS ARE THE NORM. "In 2000, as a case example, nearly 7,000 US municipal drinking water systems affecting 10.5 million inhabitants failed to meet safe water criteria, on account of biofilms in the distribution systems." SPACE AGENCIES are particularly sensitive to the issues of biofilms for health and bio- contamination reasons, and go to extreme cleaning protocols in their very defined and aseptic environments to try and ensure sterility. This controlled microcosm is emblematic of the larger problems faced by giant and degrading infrastructures servicing homes. View in LinkedIn
