TUNABLE PHOTONIC CRYSTALS are at the heart of chameleon color changes. This is a reminder of how little we understand the coloration of these animals. The proximity of the guanine nanocrystals changes according to the excitation of the animal, causing color shifts. How they change the spacing in these crystal lattices remains illusive.
