MERCURY IN MAYAN culture. A once dominant culture that became self-destructive, with enormous ritual sacrifices of tearing the living heart out (including the winners of ball games). Cinnabar (red mercury sulfide) is highly toxic and was ground to make vermillion dye that was widely used for decoration and ceramics in Mayan culture. Like the lead poisoning associated with the decay of the Roman culture, mercury toxicity is tantalizingly linked to decline of the once-great Maya culture. Lesson?”
