"BUD DORMANCY prevents the outgrowth of buds, for instance in perennial plants during winter or in potato tubers, whereas seed dormancy prevents the germination of intact viable seeds during (temporary) favourable conditions in an otherwise unfavourable season. Both types of dormancy are characterized by very low metabolic activities and a temporary insensitivity to growth-promoting signals." https://lnkd.in/dgHUjzK View in LinkedIn

LARGE AND BLURRING BORDERLINE. "The fact that all the dominant modern theories consider that life progressively emerged from some kind of proto-organisms, strongly grounds the hypothesis of the existence of a large and blurring borderline between living and non-living, were the inert progressively fades into the living." https://lnkd.in/dEj5vVD View in LinkedIn

TIMING CYCLES WITH SEASONS. "The duration of these different states widely varies between species and the timing of the transitions between them is highly regulated. This regulation ensures that the most vulnerable phases of the life cycle occur during favourable seasonal and environmental conditions. Two of the systems that control developmental transitions depend on dormancy mechanisms." https://lnkd.in/dgHUjzK View in LinkedIn

PLANT CYCLES. "Plants are bound to the location where they have established themselves and require developmental adaptations to survive unfavourable environmental conditions. Most plants cycle between different developmental states, starting with the seed, followed by the seedling, the vegetative phase, and finally the reproductive phase." https://lnkd.in/dgHUjzK View in LinkedIn

"SEED DORMANCY is an important component of plant fitness that causes a delay of germination until the arrival of a favourable growth season. Dormancy is a complex trait that is determined by genetic factors with a substantial environmental influence. Several of the tissues comprising a seed contribute to its final dormancy level. The roles of the plant hormones abscisic acid and gibberellin in the regulation of dormancy and germination have long been recognized." https://lnkd.in/dgHUjzK View in LinkedIn

SO ENDS this first weekend on plant dormancy. This phenomenon is not limited to plants. It is a mechanism to allow the organism to wait for favorable conditions for growth and reproduction, by being largely quiescent. We still know relatively little about the phenomena. Next weekend we will look at the genetic findings behind dormancy. View in LinkedIn

EPIGENETIC VERNALIZATION. "Cell division appears to only be required to stabilize the epigenetic-mediated vernalization response in Arabidopsis. Moreover, a stable versus transient vernalization response differentiates monocarpic Arabidopsis from its relative, polycarpic Arabis alpina." https://lnkd.in/duazcMZ View in LinkedIn

DORMANCY RELEASE. "We focus on the release of bud dormancy and the floral transition, post-embryonic responses of shoot meristems that occur in trees. A dormant meristem is unable to resume growth under favorable conditions; however, the dormant state is quantitative with endogenous and environmental signals continually altering the depth of dormancy (propensity for growth given advantageous conditions." https://lnkd.in/duazcMZ View in LinkedIn
