GREEN CHEMISTRY is the transition from manufacturing using toxic chemicals petrochemicals to nontoxic chemicals that are cheaper, recyclable, and more sustainable. The majority of solvents used industrially are moderately to highly toxic. But building a library of candidate green solvents that have desirable industrial properties, as the Spanish company InKemia (an early innovator in Green Chemistry) has done, is more complex than building pharmaceutical libraries, and is orders of magnitude smaller.
