FRAGMENT FROM NATURE contemplates communication and cooperation among bacteria. Often dismissed as simple organisms, bacteria are still poorly appreciated. One trait common to every single life form is the ability to communicate, within its own species and with other species, in cases of collaboration, or at least be able to eavesdrop on the chatter of other species such as prey. Communication as a part of the definition of life has so far not made the list, but should be added. View in LinkedIn

INTRASPECIES RELATIONS. “P. vortex contains two subpopulations with different locations and functions, that contribute to creation of complex pattern colonies. The coexistence of two subpopulations within P. vortex colonies allows flexibility and adjustment to heterogeneous environments including other microorganisms such as fungi.”" "(Chapter 10) https://lnkd.in/dH829kt View in LinkedIn

P. VORTEX BACTERIA. “Its information processing abilities are supported by exceptionally high number of communication related genes (two-component system (TCS), transcription factors (TFs), transport and defense related genes) suggesting a high “Bacterial Social Intelligence Quotient (IQ) Score”.”" "(Chapter 10) https://lnkd.in/dH829kt View in LinkedIn

"THE NEW HUMAN SPECIES is one that begins to engineer the evolution of viruses, plants, animals, and itself. As we do that, Darwin’s rules get bent, and sometimes even broken. By taking direct and deliberate control over our evolution, we are living in a world where we are modifying stuff according to our desires. . . . Eventually, we get to the point where evolution is guided by what we’re engineering. That’s a big deal.” (Juan Enriquez). https://lnkd.in/dKSv-YU View in LinkedIn

TECHNOLOGY. "It will change even basic questions like sex. There used to be one way to have a baby. Now there are at least 17. We have decoupled sex from time. You can have a baby in nine months, or you can freeze sperm or a fertilized egg and implant it in 10 years or 100 years. You can create an animal from one of its cells. You can begin to alter reproductive cells. By the time you put this together, you’ve fundamentally changed how you reproduce and the rules for reproduction." TERRA INFORMA. “Ninety-eight percent of data transmitted today is in a language almost no one spoke 30 years ago. We’re in a similar period now. But this revolution will be more widespread because this is software that writes its own hardware." (Juan Enriquez). https://lnkd.in/dKSv-YU View in LinkedIn

SO ENDS this brief snippet on the communication skills of bacteria. In searches for extraterrestrial life, communication should be one of the earliest search parameters, whether by sound, motion, chemicals or electronic waves. No creature exists alone, and the ability to communicate is fundamental to every life form. View in LinkedIn
