CIRCADIAN DYSFUNCTION. “Virtually all aspects of human physiology (sleep-wake cycles, body temperature, hormone secretion etc.) are mapped onto 24-hour rhythms. However, modern life styles may frequently disrupt circadian rhythm. This circadian dysfunction is considered to be an important contributory factor to the incidence of a wide range of clinical conditions including sleep disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic syndrome, inflammation, and even cancer.” https://lnkd.in/dFZDTVU View in LinkedIn

CIRCADIAN DISRUPTION. “Mice harboring mutations in circadian clock genes alter feeding behavior, endocrine signaling, and dietary fat absorption. Moreover, misalignment between behavioral and molecular circadian clocks can result in obesity in both rodents and humans. Importantly, circadian rhythms are most potently synchronized to the external environment by light information and exposure to light at night potentially disrupts circadian system function.” https://lnkd.in/dH6Ha79 View in LinkedIn

METABOLISM AND LIGHT. “Since the advent of electric lights around the turn of the 20th century, exposure to artificial and irregular light schedules has become commonplace. The increase in exposure to light at night parallels the global increase in the prevalence of obesity and metabolic disorders. In this review, we propose that exposure to light at night alters metabolic function through disruption of the circadian system.” https://lnkd.in/dH6Ha79 View in LinkedIn

CYCLIC NEUROPEPTIDES. “The timing of normal hypocretin/orexin production is critical as it contributes to staying awake (in humans typically later in the day) as sleep debt increases. In both humans and animals, absolute orexin deficiency is linked to the narcolepsy-cataplexy syndrome, while in animals a lack of orexin signaling increases risk of obesity.” http://www.biomedcentral.com/1741-7015/11/79 View in LinkedIn

METABOLIC CUES. “In recent years, humans have shifted away from the naturally occurring solar light cycle in favor of artificial and sometimes irregular light schedules produced by electric lighting. Here we report that exposure to ecologically relevant levels of dim (5 lux) light at night altered core circadian clock rhythms in the hypothalamus at both the gene and protein level. Changes in the circadian clock were associated with temporal alterations in feeding behavior and increased weight gain. These results are significant because they provide evidence that mild changes in environmental lighting can alter circadian and metabolic function.” https://lnkd.in/d5Bk98R View in LinkedIn

NIGHT OWL CONSEQUENCES. “Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is complex metabolic disease that arises as a consequence of interactions between genetic predisposition and environmental triggers. One recently described environmental trigger associated with development of T2DM is disturbance of circadian rhythms due to shift work, sleep loss, or nocturnal lifestyle. However, the underlying mechanisms behind this association are largely unknown.” https://lnkd.in/diSfaUf View in LinkedIn
