SO ENDS this second and last weekend focused on the history of vitalism. Later in time, reductionism hit the inevitable wall as a method to explain the world, and concepts entwined with systems, connections, and ‘greater than the sum of the parts’, evocative of the phenomena of emergence, were called upon to explain biological properties, ironically a new twist on vitalism. Emergence is but a fluffy term for unexpected phenomena that arise spontaneously out of complexity, but is not understood mechanistically. View in LinkedIn
