CLUSTERS ONLY WORK WITH INTERACTION. The MRC Unit at Cambridge (UK) has had more than its share of famous scientists. The reported answer to why, was surprising. Because at 10:30 am and 3:30 pm the tea lady rang a bell and people emerged from their labs for a cuppa. They chatted about their experimental" "problems, and cross-fertilization of ideas occurred. Combined with a lively pub scene where ideas also got debated and unlikely friendships crafted, this was a healthy, interacting early cluster that was very productive. EXPERTS ARE DIFFERENT FROM MENTORS. All mentors are experts to some degree, but few experts are mentors. An expert has deep and narrow knowledge, but has not had entrepreneurial success or leadership experience in startups: they are superb at solving specific technical questions. Mentors are successful entrepreneurs who also have deep sector knowledge, although usually not as deep as experts. They are excellent guides for CEOs and founders in High Tech startups. When seeking advice, it is sound policy to separate these categories. Experts belong on SABs, Mentors on boards. View in LinkedIn

TOP BIO CLUSTER CITIES is rather US-centric, and might also be expanded to include up-and-coming cities like Barcelona, London, and clusters in Taiwan, Japan, India, Singapore, Saudi, and China. Let us not forget that China is building whole new "medical cities", and already has significant clusters in places like Shanghai. These emerging clusters already have critical mass. THE COMPENSATION OF THE CEO IN PUBLIC COMPANIES is under the constant scrutiny of watchdog groups. The public company Comp Committee must determine an appropriate peer group as a comparator, and justify its percentile ranking of Executive compensation and board compensation within that comparable group.
