US EPA ON INTRUSION PROBLEMS. Low or negative water pipe pressures, especially below the water table, result in up to 50% of the pipes being contaminated with fecal bacteria and viruses from outside the distribution system (a study of 8 facilities in 6 US states). http://lnkd.in/dduVeJq View in LinkedIn

INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT UNPOPULAR. “For decades, these systems ... have been ignored by politicians and residents accustomed to paying almost nothing for water delivery and sewage removal. And so each year, hundreds of thousands of ruptures damage streets and homes and cause dangerous pollutants to seep into drinking water supplies.” http://realtruth.org/articles/100709-002-americas.html View in LinkedIn

"POINT-OF-USE DEVICES (such as under-the-sink activated-carbon and/or membrane filters or ultraviolet (UV)-light disinfection units) and bottled water are likely to become increasingly popular. However, bottled water and point-of-use devices in California — as currently produced, regulated and marketed — are not reliable alternatives to the available public water supply." http://lnkd.in/dssgvHd View in LinkedIn

POOR COUNTRIES cannot afford complex water purification systems. Point-of-use UV purification has been shown to significantly reduce severe diarrheal diseases in children. In Chiapas Mexico, only 31% of water is fit for human consumption. UV kits are highly effective (99-100%) at eliminating parasites, bacteria and viruses, but in field use they were less effective. http://lnkd.in/dWFacSa View in LinkedIn

EVERY SOURCE OF WATER LEAKAGE is also a potential pathogen and unwanted pollutants entry point into previously treated water. With 19,000 miles of piping and up to 900 mega liters of leakage per day, the London Thames Water system is simply too vast a system to operate without these problems. London is not alone. New solutions are needed. View in LinkedIn
