"TRADITIONAL CRYSTALS are 3D solid structures made up of atoms or molecules bonded together in an orderly and repeating pattern. Common examples are ice, salt and snowflakes. Crystallization takes place when heat is removed from a molecular system until it reaches its lower energy state. At a certain point of lower energy, continuous spatial symmetry breaks down and the crystal assumes discrete symmetry, meaning that instead of the structure being the same in all directions, it is the same in only a few directions." https://lnkd.in/ea8Mnvh View in LinkedIn

FRAGMENT IN NATURE this weekend focuses on space-time crystals. Normal crystal structures have long fascinated scientists for developing stable ordered structures, often with special properties, out of chaotic aqueous mixtures. Considerable understanding of crystal structures has accumulated. A genius physicist put the cat among the pigeons by thinking of crystals in the fourth dimension, as we will see. View in LinkedIn

ALMOST PERPETUAL MOTION. "Wilczek had developed an apparent proof of “time crystals” — physical structures that move in a repeating pattern, like minute hands rounding clocks, without expending energy or ever winding down. Unlike clocks or any other known objects, time crystals derive their movement not from stored energy but from a break in the symmetry of time, enabling a special form of perpetual motion." http://www.wired.com/2013/04/time-crystals/ View in LinkedIn

SUPERCONDUCTOR ANALOGY. “While a space-time crystal looks like a perpetual motion machine and may seem implausible at first glance ... keep in mind that a superconductor or even a normal metal ring can support persistent electron currents in its quantum ground state under the right conditions. Of course, electrons in a metal lack spatial order and therefore can’t be used to make a space-time crystal.” https://lnkd.in/ea8Mnvh View in LinkedIn

BUG COMPUTER. "We successfully designed, constructed, and tested a bacterial computer capable of finding a Hamiltonian path in a three node directed graph. This proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates that bacterial computing is a new way to address NP-complete problems using the inherent advantages of genetic systems." http://www.jbioleng.org/content/3/1/11/abstract View in LinkedIn

"TO VISUALIZE A TIME CRYSTAL, think of Earth looping back to its same location in space every 365¼ days; the planet repeats itself periodically as it moves through time. But a true time crystal is made not of a planet but of an object in its lowest energy state, like an electron stripped of all possible energy. "This object could endlessly loop in time, just as electrons in a superconductor could theoretically flow through space for all eternity." https://lnkd.in/eQihtfr View in LinkedIn

SUPERCONDUCTORS: NEARLY SPACE-TIME CRYSTALS. "Wilczek realized that superconductors come close to acting in this way, since they exist in their lowest state but transmit an electrical current. However, they fall short because the current does not change in time." https://lnkd.in/efBJSDx View in LinkedIn
