INDIA IS FIGURING OUT ITS IP POLICY as this thoughtful commentary outlines. It has been clear to me for some years that Indian pharmaceutical patents are very shrewd, and also that the IP industry including patent challenges are sophisticated. The key is to not cave to Activist views and keep the middle ground where patented innovator drugs from abroad are respected under patent treaties, and also to develop a sensible way to get approved Western drugs through Indian trials while not becoming a case for The Constant Gardener. WAVE POWER INITIATIVES ARE ALL OVER THE WORLD, and kicked off in about 1998 in Scotland and then 2008 with a Wave Farm off Portugal. Some estimate that waves could generate 10 trillion Watts of power. Gavin Newsome, former mayor of San Francisco, proposed a giant turbine under the Golden Gate Bridge, but nothing has happened. Theoretically, clean energy, with huge production potential is possible from wave farms. Curiously, this industry is in its infancy, and still a way away from attracting investors. View in LinkedIn

THE LEAN STARTUP METHOD is about adopting an experimental method in the search for customer access. This makes perfect sense for some companies but not for technology companies who are years away from a product and are unlikely ever to meet the customer. Specialty Pharma companies have years of formulation, preclinical testing, and eventually clinical trials to get a licensable product. Overall, the steps are pretty clear, although the outcomes are not. In these cases, a well-articulated plan of the steps and costs are valuable (flexible) roadmaps, and product forecasts will always be wrong. http://lnkd.in/EQumPg View in LinkedIn

DNA VACCINES FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES MAKE SENSE: No cold chain and can be nasally administered by unskilled workers. The cold chain issue has been a thorn for the Gates effort, and s significant limitation for delivering vaccines in hot poor countries with meagre infrastructure. Equally, getting staff trained in sterile injection technique adds expense. Bill Gates has done countless good by his initiative: now let technology assist. http://lnkd.in/6hTk8e View in LinkedIn

THE LEGO FAMILY'S NEW DANISH SCHOOL to teach children to think, not just pass exams by "INQUIRY-BASED EDUCATION" is deeply refreshing. Overall, we have done a poor job in our education system and experimentation had been sparse. We had the UK Summerhill adventure, then Montessori Schools. But beyond the moves for distance learning we have not been very innovative with different approaches. Great initiative! http://lnkd.in/mhgT3H View in LinkedIn
