PROGRESS IN FORMING THE NEW RUSSIAN SILICON VALLEY. Russia has invested heavily in an effort to create technology clusters and a critical mass, and by all accounts is making exciting progress. There have been similar efforts all over the world, and new ones keep emerging, ranging from Spain, Taiwan, China, India, Singapore, the UK, Japan, and UAE, to name but a few. THE FRENCH ANTIPATHY TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP appears to be thawing, thanks to women entrepreneurs. This trait exists in Spain and Japan also, where being part of the group and not "unusual" trumps starting a new company. BIOSPRING BARCELONA is a testament to the status of the biopharma industry in Catalunya, and to the years of very successful public and private initiatives and investment in the sector. I have posted this before but it bears repeating: CATALUNYA FEELS LIKE BOSTON IN 1989, when the biotech industry took off in the US. I was there. It has infrastructure, universities, an entrepreneurial culture, and sources of early capital. There is a tangible buzz of excitement here.
