SELF-CONSTRUCTING CIRCUITRY. "In 2010, something better did come along: Andrew Wade's Gemini spaceship magically appeared on the scene, and things suddenly got much easier for would-be replicator designers. Self-constructing circuitry was no longer just a theoretical possibility but an accomplished fact -- and the Gemini made it look downright easy." https://lnkd.in/dNTQG9j View in LinkedIn

LARGE POPULATION. "Life enthusiasts have since catalogued an entire zoo of interesting patterns, such as “spaceships” that travel across the grid, or “guns”, which constantly spawn other patterns. But a pattern that spawned an identical copy of itself proved elusive." Too bad nomenclatures were not biological. https://lnkd.in/d5EF-mB View in LinkedIn

SHORTFALLS. "A Gemini spaceship is not a replicator, any more than a glider or other small spaceship is! A replicator is a pattern that makes copies of itself: the total number of copies of the pattern has to increase over time. If a pattern is "used up" in some way by the copying process, and is not capable of completing another cycle of replication after the first, then to be a true replicator it would have to produce two or more children simultaneously. Otherwise the pattern falls into some other category." https://lnkd.in/dNTQG9j View in LinkedIn

THE HOPE. "First replicating creature spawned in life simulator. If you found a self-replicating organism living inside your computer, your first instinct might be to reach for the antivirus software. If, however, you are Andrew Wade, an avid player in the two-dimensional, mathematical universe known as the Game of Life, such a discovery is nothing short of an epiphany." FIRST COMPLETE REPLICATOR. "The Game of Life was used to create the first self-constructing scheme. It creates a copy of itself while destructing its parent. And finally in 2013 Dave Greene created the first complete replicator containing its own instructions to replicate! Forty-three years after Conway's publication!" https://lnkd.in/d3B2FKW View in LinkedIn

GEMINI. "On May 18, 2010, Andrew J. Wade announced a self-constructing pattern dubbed Gemini which creates a copy of itself while destroying its parent. This pattern replicates in 34 million generations, and uses an instruction tape made of gliders which oscillate between two stable configurations made of Chapman-Greene construction arms. These, in turn, create new copies of the pattern, and destroy the previous copy." https://lnkd.in/dzs-Kxk View in LinkedIn

GEMINI STATS VS LIFE. "And it replicates in only 34 million generations?! The best estimate so far for a typical UCC-based Life replicator was 10^18 generations. I see that you have removed all but the bare minimum -- that is probably the simplest possible self-replicator, and very elegant, too. Well, congratulations -- you have single-handedly beaten the collaborative effort between myself, Dave Greene and Paul Chapman to realise a Life replicator." https://lnkd.in/dpf5iAu View in LinkedIn
