PUSH INNOVATION is an invention that looks for a market and applications. A Pull Invention is the result of finding an unmet need and solving it. The smartphone was a Push innovation. Most people did not know they needed such a device and few could have articulated the need. Google Glass feel more of a Push. 3D printing may have also been a Push. Applications are popping up everywhere, and some unanticipated (printing food in space). Push is an imaginative expansion of a technology; Pull is finding technology to solve an identified problem. COMPLIANCE or adherence to a medication regime has long been a goal to achieve better patient outcomes. But today we add to that mix pharmacoeconomic considerations. Not just better outcomes but also cost effective outcomes. This language and approach is relatively new for American medicine, but has been part of the fabric in Britain for years. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (under the nasty acronym NICE) is an evidence based medicine agency established in 1999, to service the NHS. From 2014 it will be key for value-based pricing (cost benefit) of brand drugs in the UK. " "" " http://www.aafp.org/news-now/inside-aafp/20130507prescripcoalition.html View in LinkedIn

FDA NICOTINE REGULATION started in 2011, but does not resemble drug regulation. Yes, tobacco and cigarettes fall under FDA, but if regulation was a level playing field, a product that caused so much morbidity and mortality would long ago have been banned. E-cigarettes in the US earn 1 bn USD annually and may be regulated in the future. The US health warning labels on cigarettes pales compared to the massive labels in Europe. The US debate on tobacco got derailed by tobacco company lobbying and refocused on whether or not to ban menthol in cigarettes. View in LinkedIn

MOBILE HEALTH APPS are in the FDA spotlight after a urine test App was told it would need a 510(k) approval, and other Apps measuring vital signs are in limbo. The UK's NHS has set its stamp of approval for safety on 70 of some 13,000 Apps worldwide. In January 2012 the first UK CE Mark was issued for a health App. It seems most unlikely that regulatory approval will be circumvented by Apps for medical measurements or diagnosis ranging from diabetes to hearing loss. http://lnkd.in/FD7P8X View in LinkedIn

DIABETES: Harvard researchers claim to have found the root cause of diabetes, a T-cell autoimmune destruction of the pancreas. If confirmed independently, this is big news in a field that has made marginal progress since the discovery of insulin by Banting and Best in 1921 in the dog called Lucy. http://lnkd.in/hVNT2a View in LinkedIn
