SEX AND EUKS. "Given that sexual reproduction is pervasive and extant in all of the major super groups of the eukaryotic tree of life, it is hypothesized the sex emerged once in an ancestral eukaryote and has been preserved and conserved throughout the eukaryotic tree of life. Thus, one can think of the ability to undergo sexual reproduction as a synapomorphy for the eukaryotes." http://www.mycologia.org/content/105/1/1.full View in LinkedIn

PROK VS EUK. "Key features that distinguish eukaryotic from prokaryotic organisms are the presence of the nucleus and other intracellular organelles (mitochondria, chloroplasts, Golgi, endoplasmic reticulum), the emergence of multicellularity and the ability to undergo true sexual reproduction." http://www.mycologia.org/content/105/1/1.full View in LinkedIn

GIANT LIFESPANS AND EVEN IMMORTALITY are demonstrated by numerous examples from the natural world. This rather stunning, and generally unappreciated fact that lifespans are not all programmed to be short raises many interesting possibilities. I will highlight some interesting examples from nature in the following postings. View in LinkedIn

CONTRARIAN VIEW. "Human life histories, as compared to those of other primates and mammals, have at least four distinctive characteristics: an exceptionally long lifespan, an extended period of juvenile dependence, support of reproduction by older post-reproductive individuals, and male support of reproduction through the provisioning of females and their offspring." A fascinating read. https://lnkd.in/dDxfUbh View in LinkedIn

TWOFOLD COST. "Now sexual reproduction not only confers benefits but also comes with costs. This includes the well known so-called twofold cost of sex. In most sexual cycles it takes two parents to produce one offspring, resulting in only 50% of any given parent’s genes being transmitted to a progeny. This is contrasted with asexual mitotic reproduction in which one parent can produce one progeny, and in which 100% of the parental genes are transmitted to the progeny, thus resulting in a twofold cost of sex vs. mitotic asexual production of progeny. http://www.mycologia.org/content/105/1/1.full View in LinkedIn

MEDICINE AND NUTRITION has shifted the Preston Curve. "Further significant finding of Preston's study was that the curve has shifted upwards during the 20th century. This means that life expectancy has increased in most countries, independently of changes in income. Preston credited education, better technology, vaccinations, improved provision of public health services, oral rehydration therapy and better nutrition with these exogenous improvements in health." https://lnkd.in/db2auRq View in LinkedIn
