HISTORIC CASE. "In 1958 a unique illness began to be recognized in the area around Minamata Bay, on the Japanese island of Kyushu....chemical industries around the bay had been discharging inorganic mercury wastes into the waters, where anaerobic bacteria in the detritus on the floor of the bay converted the inorganic mercury into methylmercury. Scientists estimated that biomagnification in food chains may have been as high as a millionfold." This was particularly due to the heavy fish diet and toxin concentration in the food chain. FUTURE DIGITIZED MEDICINE. "The convergence of these two fields—genomics, marked by the rapidly plummeting cost of sequencing a person's entire genetic code, and wireless, with its flurry of innovative health-care apps—led Dr. Eric Topol to write "The Creative Destruction of Medicine," a book that offers an illuminating perspective on the coming digitization of health care."" MERCURY IN MAYAN culture. A once dominant culture that became self-destructive, with enormous ritual sacrifices of tearing the living heart out (including the winners of ball games). Cinnabar (red mercury sulfide) is highly toxic and was ground to make vermillion dye that was widely used for decoration and ceramics in Mayan culture. Like the lead poisoning associated with the decay of the Roman culture, mercury toxicity is tantalizingly linked to decline of the once-great Maya culture. Lesson?" WIRELESS MEDICINE. “I think the future of chronic disease control will be implanted devices, They will be measuring vital signs, reaching back to the healthcare providers, whoever that might be and wherever they’re based. So you can imagine consultants and doctors around the world, or your local doctor, firing up a single app and being able to receive alerts on a patient.” Quote from Sadie Creese, director of the Global Centre for Cyber Security Capacity at the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford. WHO ON DENTAL MERCURY: No. 1 source of mercury vapor in non-industrialized areas. Really, whatever were we thinking when we permitted this toxin in our mouths? 19 tons a year are polluted by the clinical waste stream in the UK alone, one third from dental amalgams. IRREVERSIBLE MERCURY CONTAMINATION. "Across the United States, mercury pollution has contaminated 18 million acres of lakes, estuaries, and wetlands (43 percent of the total), and 1.4 million river miles. From 2006 to 2008, the number of lake acres under advisory increased by 18 percent, and the number of river miles increased by 52 percent. And many waterways have not even been tested. In 2008, all 50 states issued fish consumption advisories, because they are contaminated with mercury."" " http://lnkd.in/bg62Q8A. View in LinkedIn
