PAINTED LADY BUTTERFLY MIGRATION. "The findings also revealed that the species undertakes a phenomenal 9,000 mile round trip from tropical Africa to the Arctic Circle – almost double the length of the famous migrations undertaken by Monarch butterflies in North America." GENETIC BASIS SUSPECTED. "Several lines of evidence, including quantitative genetic analyses and experimental approaches, suggest that this variation may be partially genetically determined, derived from standing genetic variation and controlled by a few genes of large effect; experimental approaches include displacement; and common gardens." https://lnkd.in/dWFycUQ View in LinkedIn

SO ENDS this first of two weekends on the sense of place as exhibited in migratory creatures. We live on a planet full of restless beasts, which have two homes, and long distances between them. On the face of it, it seems a perilous arrangement, or at least a wasteful one; many perish on these long journeys, both the young and the old. And as the beloved swallows prepare to migrate here in Spain, it is impossible not to wonder about their Herculean efforts. View in LinkedIn

THREE RULES. "He programmed virtual flying objects—the eponymous Boids—to move according to three simple rules. They aligned with the average heading of their neighbours; they were attracted to each other; and they also repulsed each other to keep some personal space. These three simple rules were enough to simulate a realistic bird-like flock." http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2014/02/27/a-bird-like-flock-of-autonomous-drones/ View in LinkedIn

STRONG SUSPICIONS. "High genetic correlations among incidence, amount, intensity and timing of migratory activity in blackcaps suggest that these components of migratory behaviour are influenced by common genetic mechanisms." http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/early/2011/02/11/rspb.2010.2567 View in LinkedIn

BIRD BOTS. "They’re autonomous, meaning that they compute their flight plans on their own, without any central control. They can follow instructions, but they work out their own paths using GPS signals to navigate and radio signals to talk to one another. They’re the closest thing we have to an artificial flock of birds." http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2014/02/27/a-bird-like-flock-of-autonomous-drones/ View in LinkedIn

FLOCK OF AUTONOMOUS DRONES. "In a field outside Budapest, Hungary, ten quadcopter drones are flying as a coordinated flock. They zip through the great outdoors, fly in formation, or even follow a leader." http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2014/02/27/a-bird-like-flock-of-autonomous-drones/ View in LinkedIn

EMERGENT PROPERTIES. "Outdoor flocking and formation flight with autonomous aerial robots. We present the first decentralized multi-copter flock that performs stable autonomous outdoor flight with up to 10 flying agents. By decentralized and autonomous we mean that all members navigate themselves based on the dynamic information received from other robots in the vicinity. We do not use central data processing or control." https://lnkd.in/d3iDMRC View in LinkedIn
