GREEN CHEMISTRY "is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. Often referred to as a form of molecular- level pollution prevention, Green Chemistry relies on a set of 12 principles that can be used to design or re-design molecules, materials and chemical transformations to be safer for human health and the environment."" MATERIALS GENOME INITIATIVE (2012): $100 M with "funding for the DOE, the DOF, the NSF, and the NIST. The initiative will support the development of computational tools, software, new methods for material characterization, and the development of open standards and databases that will make the process of discovery and development of advanced materials faster, less expensive, and more predictable." (Read the goals and funders carefully). " " http://materialsinnovation.tms.org/genome.aspx View in LinkedIn

HUMAN GENOME PROJECT did not anticipate either Big Data, nor Personalized Medicine driving a paradigm shift in medicine, nor epigenetics. In the moment, the excitement then was about the model of new genes leading to new disease tests which (proved to be correct). And that the discovery of a disease gene would lead to its associated protein -- and thus to a new drug target (this essentially proved to be wrong). Nor did it anticipate Bioinformatics. Nor the Synthetic Biology Revolution. And the story continues to unfold. Many unanticipated consequences. View in LinkedIn

NEW NIH BIG DATA CENTER OF EXCELLENCE known as Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) to make quantum jump. "The goal of BD2K is to enhance the ability to analyze the ever-expanding amount of data of all types, enabling, by the end of this decade, a quantum leap in the ability of the biomedical research enterprise to maximize the value of the growing volume and complexity of biomedical data."" APP FOR PERSONALIZED MEDICINE. YarcData and Selventa developed a systems diagnostics tool (“SysDx”) which "harnesses a wide range of complex molecular biological information to deliver a level of personalized medicine that has been previously unavailable." "With 50 percent of drugs [being] ineffective or worse, there is an immediate opportunity to better match treatments to individuals based on their biomarker profiles."" ECOCHEM CONFERENCE in Basel Nov 19-21, 2013: fascinating to hear "ecological, recyclable, non-toxic, sustainable" from the original bad boys themselves, sounding now like corporatized 1960s hippies with their recyclable organic hessian conference bags. Green chemistry is finally (seriously) starting to take root. View in LinkedIn

DATA DELUGE BLOCKS PERSONALIZED MEDICINE. "The ominous warnings of a `data deluge' in the life sciences from high-throughput DNA sequencing data are being supplanted by a second deluge, of cliches bemoaning our collective scientific fate unless we address the genomic data `tsunami'. It is imperative that we explore...also transcriptional and epigenetic variability, integrating these observations in order to attain a genuine understanding of how genes function, towards a goal of genomics-based personalized medicine."" GENOMIC DATA EXPLOSION. "Biology is now one of the fastest growing fields of big data science. Since the completion of the Human Genome project... there has been an unprecedented proliferation of genomic sequence data. A consequence of this is that the medical discoveries of the future will largely depend on our ability to process and analyse large genomic data sets, which continue to expand as the cost of sequencing decreases.""
