ENHANCE AND AUGMENT. “Aside from Musk, another notable personality who’s concerned with ensuring that humanity is not surpassed by AI is Braintree founder Bryan Johnson. In October 2016, Johnson committed $100 million to his company, Kernel, whose main objective is developing technology that will enable programming of our neural code. This will entail the building of a neural prosthetic to enhance and augment human intelligence — not just allow human-machine interface, but also go further by reducing our cognitive deficiencies to eventually allow us to fight off neurological diseases such as ALS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.” https://lnkd.in/d98S_7K View in LinkedIn

SO ENDS this two weekend consideration of the tricky subject of culture and evolution. One can argue that any society, glued together by very diverse modes of communication, develops an arsenal of cultural tools that may, or may not, be distinguished from genetic evolution, that help that group adapt, evolve and succeed. Culture may simply be a complex form of adaption that interlaces with genetics in ways to be discovered. Is the monarch butterfly’s migration map, which changes annually according to conditions, and is transmitted to the next generation, genetic or cultural? View in LinkedIn

WIDESPREAD ANIMAL CULTURE. “Studies attribute additional orca behaviors, such as migration routes and song repertoires, to culture. Other research suggests that a finch’s song, a chimpanzee’s nut cracking, and a guppy’s foraging route are all manifestations of culture. Between 2012 and 2014, over 100 research groups published work on animal culture covering 66 species.” http://www.pnas.org/content/114/30/7734.full View in LinkedIn

LANGUAGES or more simply, communication is found in all life forms, often in chemical messages, such as quorum sensing in bacteria; one can argue that communication is the fountain of cultural evolution, and thus, culture is to be found in all communities of creatures, right down to viruses. Run with that one! View in LinkedIn

CYBORG. "Professor Kevin Warwick, the world's leading expert in Cybernetics, here he unveils the story of how he became the worlds first Cyborg in a ground breaking set of scientific experiments. The possibility exists to enhance human capabilities. To harness the ever increasing abilities of machine intelligence, to enable extra sensory input and to communicate in a much richer way, using thought alone." https://lnkd.in/dC_wQEM View in LinkedIn

PROFESSOR KEVIN WARWICK, Chair of Cybernetics, University of Reading. "By the age of 40 he had been awarded higher doctorates (D.Sc.) by both Imperial College and by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague for his research output in completely separate areas. He was presented with the 'Future of Health Technology Award' in Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was made an Honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences, St.Petersburg. He has received the IET Achievement Medal, the IET Mountbatten Medal and in 2011 the Ellison-Cliffe Medal from the Royal Society of Medicine." https://lnkd.in/dtrVfW6 View in LinkedIn

BRAIN IMPLANT. "UK researcher Kevin Warwick used a neural implant to send signals to a chip embedded in his wife’s arm, allowing him to transmit rudimentary 'communication' from his brain to another person electronically. He also used the same technology to control a robotic arm across the Atlantic - the technology that allows the brain to send signals can also send those signals to a machine." http://www.sciencealert.com/we-ve-started-to-figure-out-how-to-send-a-thought-directly-from-one-brain-to-another-here-s-what-that-could-help-us-do?utm_source=Article&utm_medium=Website&utm_campaign=InArticleReadMore View in LinkedIn

ELECTRICAL BRAIN STIMULATION. "Research has shown that by delivering electricity to the right part of the brain, we can change the threshold of neurons that transmit information in our brain, and by doing that we can improve cognitive abilities in different types of psychological functions." https://lnkd.in/dniDZRE View in LinkedIn
