WHY SETTING UP A FOREIGN OFFICE MATTERS. For example: you are an emerging European company seeking foreign financing, because it is a dry well in Europe. You target US VCs. Guess what? Unless you are in an easy travel radius from their offices, not a prayer. Set up a Palo Alto office, so you can meet them on their doorstep, hold future board meetings there, and so on. FIRST IN CLASS, AND BEST OF BREED are common terms in Biopharma business presentations. The First in Class refers to a novel Mechanism of Action (MOA), and Best of Breed to ranking in a class of the same molecular targets. The first is a disruptive innovation at a molecular level, identifying a novel target, while the second is an incremental improvement on known targets. Both the disruptive and incremental advances can score tremendous valuations, illustrating that disruptive is not the only legitimate goal for entrepreneurs or investors. View in LinkedIn

Investor optimism will likely continue to be driven by liquidity events through M&As and IPOs. BIOPHARMA IS A FORMIDABLE ECONOMIC ENGINE OF GROWTH. "The biotech industry is a key driver of modern economic progress" (Battell, 2098). Although only about forty years old, by 2015 it is predicted to exceed 320 B USD in sales, and generate well over 1 M skilled well-paying jobs. Considering that the global Pharma industry is driven by only about 370 new drugs approved in the past decade, it is clear that the room for growth is considerable. View in LinkedIn

DUE DILIGENCE IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE if a company wishes to hide something, or if there is fraud. Exhaustive checklists, and representations and warranties can be dodged or misrepresented, if you have gone through due diligence and found nothing at all amiss, this should be a red flag. Your final resort is to triangulate with as many sources as possible, and perhaps most importantly, follow your gut feelings. There are more war stories about incomplete due diligence than perhaps any other business topic. Be highly skeptical and don't fall in love with an idea. Always be ready to walk away. View in LinkedIn
