"BIRTH AT SEA was a prerequisite for the first fully-aquatic whales, the Basilosauridae (including Dorudon) which evolved from Protocetidae later in the Eocene. Basilosauridae have reduced hind limbs that no longer contact the vertebral column and could not support the weight of the body on land. Hence they could no longer come out of the sea onto land to give birth." http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0004366 View in LinkedIn

INTERNAL CLOCK OF TREES. "Endogenous rhythmic growth in oak trees is regulated by internal clocks rather than resource availability. The results indicate that rhythmic growth involves dramatic oscillations in plant metabolism and gene regulation between below- and above-ground parts. Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis may play a previously unsuspected role in smoothing these oscillations without modifying the rhythmic growth pattern." http://jxb.oxfordjournals.org/content/66/22/7113.full View in LinkedIn

"THE CLOCK appears thus far to be considerably conserved with the rest of the plant kingdom. Thanks to molecular studies, and the use of circadian reporter systems, we know that the central oscillator consists of three interlocking auto-regulatory transcriptional feedback loops." https://lnkd.in/dyrdvNg View in LinkedIn

WIDESPREAD. "In plants, circadian rhythmicity is widespread; a transcriptional circadian cycling has been reported in a range of diverse species, including the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana in which the clock has been well characterized. Approximately one-third of the Arabidosis transcriptome shows circadian oscillations in abundance when in free-run conditions, indicating direct or indirect circadian control." https://lnkd.in/dyrdvNg View in LinkedIn

CIRCADIAN CLOCKS. "Recent work on circadian rhythm synchronization neatly illustrates the signaling and communication role performed by plant and animal cellular circadian clocks. The capacity of the suprachiasmatic nucleus neurons in mammals to put distal circadian clocks in synchrony is paralleled by circadian clocks located in plant shoot apex cells; clocks that can entrain distal root cells courtesy of the plant vasculature signaling pathways." http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11229-016-1040-1 View in LinkedIn

SO ENDS this first of two weekends on the monumental changes involved in the return of early whales to the sea. The extent of the anatomic, physiological, genetic and biochemical changes in this reversal is breathtaking. It was colossal enough to transition from breathing water to breathing air, and all that went with it, but the return journey back to the sea followed a different path than simply reversing the one followed for escaping the sea. MOLECULAR CLOCKS. “Circadian rhythms of transcription likely arise from interaction of oscillator components or downstream factors with circadian-regulated and phase-specific cis elements across the genome. There may also be genome-wide circadian regulation of mRNA splicing. Post-translational processes including phosphorylation and poly ADP ribosylation, and also redox, Ca2+ and metabolite signaling participate in circadian regulation in Arabidopsis.” https://lnkd.in/dAX4kdh View in LinkedIn
