SAMPLE OF THE COSMOS. “These particles are thus a genuine sample of solar, galactic, and extragalactic matter that includes all known nuclei and their long-lived isotopes, as well as electrons and antiparticles. This makes the CR radiation a unique messenger to probe high-energy phenomena. The CR energy spectrum extends several orders of magnitude from ~10(6) eV to about ~10(21) eV.” (CR = cosmic ray). https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10686-021-09708-w.pdf View in LinkedIn

ORIGIN OF COSMIC RAYS. “The leading paradigm is that the bulk of CRs are generated in Galactic processes such as supernova explosions or stellar winds, although extragalactic sources and secondary production by primary CRs with the Interstellar Medium (ISM) may contribute as well to the observed flux.” (CR = cosmic ray). https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10686-021-09708-w.pdf View in LinkedIn

SCRAMBLED INFORMATION. “The origin of CRs remains a century-old puzzle also considering the fact that, before reaching Earth, their directions are randomized by the interstellar magnetic fields.” (CR = cosmic ray). https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10686-021-09708-w.pdf View in LinkedIn

THE BIG PICTURE. “Our cosmos is 13.8 billion years old. Our planet was formed 4.5 billion years ago and life began 3.7 billion years ago. Our species, Homo Sapiens, is just over 300,000 years old. Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo and Newton appeared among us only in the last 500 years.” Never forget this. By the unique James Lovelock. https://lnkd.in/ez-yqczg View in LinkedIn

HIGH ENERGY RAYS. “Galactic sources of CRs, such as supernova remnants, should be able to accelerate CR particles via diffusive shock acceleration mechanisms up to the PeV energy scale (~10(15) eV).” (CR = cosmic ray). https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10686-021-09708-w.pdf View in LinkedIn

WEAK LINK. “While calculations are reaching an increasing level of complexity and reliability, the existing models of astrophysical backgrounds crucially depend on our knowledge of CR acceleration and propagation processes through the Galaxy, which are still poorly understood.” (CR = cosmic ray). https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10686-021-09708-w.pdf View in LinkedIn

MOIRÉ. This has always fascinated me. When you walk by curving vertical railings they pattern strangely. Watered silks show a water ripple effect. Umbrellas in street lights can also display these optical effects. Moiré patterns “are large-scale interference patterns that can be produced when an opaque ruled pattern with transparent gaps is overlaid on another similar pattern. For the moiré interference pattern to appear, the two patterns must not be completely identical, but rather displaced, rotated, or have slightly different pitch.” https://lnkd.in/eTaUqNwu View in LinkedIn

FRAGMENT FROM NATURE focuses on moiré effects in imperfect materials leading to emergent properties, where each part of this sentence is spectacular in its own right. This includes moiré effects created recently by the discovery of the ‘magic angle’. These curious and beautiful optical effects have many applications. https://lnkd.in/eZSgkAEN View in LinkedIn
