CHLORINE IS A SELECTIVE PRESSURE to aquatic pathogens, just as antibiotics is a selective pressure to other pathogens. Fast-mutating and highly adaptable creatures like microorganisms make a living finding metabolic work-arounds by genetic variation. ALTERNATIVE WATER PURIFICATION TECHNOLOGIES are needed, and exist. There is a lot of gratuitous disinformation in the literature about their relative merits. Despite some negative forces operating in water treatment innovation, such as resistance to change from chlorine, there are some exciting new developments arising, driven in part by the public's clear concerns about drinking water quality.
