PHAGEBIOTICS. There is an upsurge of interest in creative circles about the use of phages in place of antibiotics. Given the alarm in public health circles about antibiotic resistant superbugs, this is a timely development. No magic bullet but a natural evolving antibiotic system that has evolved over the millennia. http://lnkd.in/dda_MqZ View in LinkedIn

NEW POSSIBILITIES. "However, the past 20 years have seen a dramatic change in the water industry's approach to water treatment in which water utilities have started to seriously consider alternative treatment technologies to the traditional filtration/chlorination treatment approach." http://lnkd.in/dmxbCAh View in LinkedIn

PHAGE BEAUTY PARADE. "Sewage contains up to 1,000 times more viruses than other water bodies. Civil and environmental engineers screen sewage to find phages that can improve drinking and wastewater treatment. Briefly, they ... are grown on agar plates seeded with the bacterium the engineers want to kill." http://lnkd.in/de4_ujq View in LinkedIn

TECHNOLOGY STASIS. "For the first 75 years of this century, chemical clarification, granular media filtration, and chlorination were virtually the only treatment processes used in municipal water treatment." Time to wake up and catch up with the considerable amount of innovation in almost every other field. http://lnkd.in/dmxbCAh View in LinkedIn

CHLORINE IS A SELECTIVE PRESSURE to aquatic pathogens, just as antibiotics is a selective pressure to other pathogens. Fast-mutating and highly adaptable creatures like microorganisms make a living finding metabolic work-arounds by genetic variation. Like static molecule antibiotics, chlorine will follow that same fateful path of driving resistant pathogen development. View in LinkedIn

PHAGE WATER PURIFICATION. "Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and lyse bacteria. Interest in the ability of phages to control bacterial populations has extended from medical applications into the fields of agriculture, aquaculture and the food industry," and water treatment." http://lnkd.in/d5kGy56http://lnkd.in/d-ypFD6 View in LinkedIn

THE GANGES RIVER has had legendary curative powers despite abundant rotting carcasses, sewage, and filth. This was attributed to bacteriophages (phages) in the 1890s by Ernest Hankin and Félix d'Hérelle, where the phages in the river could be protected against cholera and dysentery. http://lnkd.in/dna94zQ View in LinkedIn

BACTERIOPHAGES ARE EVERYWHERE. We live in the midst of bacteriophages "With just about every bite of food, every sip of water, we ingest countless numbers of phages. They are found everywhere, especially where bacteria are common, like in wastewaters for example. They keep the bacterial populations in check." http://lnkd.in/dkSZeD7 View in LinkedIn
