Sweet taste receptor genes in taste buds in the mouth can be down-regulated by bacterially-derived lipopolysaccharides, which modulates the transmission of taste input to the brain. FRAGMENT IN NATURE continues this weekend with the theme of the interaction of the microbiome with taste receptors and that effect on satiety, food selection and health. These is little literature on the effects of the microbiome directly on taste receptors in the mouth, but intuitively, it is a likely control point for these symbiotic bacteria in their host nutritional status.
