The pathology of the toxin on the glutamate receptor appears to be a mere coincidence of biochemistry, since the real purpose of domoic acid is for cheating scarce iron for growth, and cheating copper to prevent toxicity, rather than as a defensive poison. These incidents have been linked to the recent and dramatic increase of a naturally occurring toxin produced by algae.
