Further evidence that the strategy of Big Pharma may be shifting. While they have always had significant investments in Universities, this may be an uptick. Consider the fact that only 25 years ago in the UK and some Universities in the US, such close ties between industry and academia were considered odious, corrupting pure science. Printing On Demand has come of age, after years under the shadow of giants, but my hunch is that it has to be here to stay. Once considered the province of "vanity presses" because they sidestepped the fickle system of the gatekeepers of the big publishing houses, they represent an enormously logical model for book publishing, no longer a warehousing system for first editions. It is also egalitarian, and lets the reading public decide who is successful.
