ARTIFICIAL BONE for dental and orthopedic surgeries has been a challenging major unmet need in medicine. New bone implants must conform perfectly to anatomic geography, not be rejected by the body, and have some of the remarkable strength and flexibility properties of natural bone. Strategies to achieve this have included bone glues, collagens, and bone grafts to recruit stem cells and growth factors. New seeding technologies using nano ceramics are also under investigation. Consolidation among mid-sized specialty Pharma companies continues to shrink this pool of companies. Now there are just a handful of players who have not been merged or bought, and the likelihood is that the trend will continue. This is particularly true for those companies like Activis whose strategy is growth by acquisition not by slow organic growth.
