THERE ARE ~4,000 SPOOF ACADEMIC JOURNALS TODAY, in the guise of Open Access, thriving on subscription fees and sidestepping peer-review. Matched with the Publish-or-Perish pressures on young academics, this is perhaps not surprising. These shady operators mimic the names of respected academic journals, and charge authors a fee to publish without any review. Spoof banking sites have been around for a long time, but this is a new wrinkle on the Dark Side.
