SOCIAL IMPACT OF SCIENCE. “Fifty years ago the average life expectancy at birth on this planet was 46 years. Today, it is 64 years. Fifty years ago, however, the difference in life expectancy at birth for a typical First World birth compared with a typical Third World birth was 26 years. Today the difference is only 12 years. And that has come about as a result of using scientific methods to bring about advances in medicine and food production. “Robert May, Office of Science and Technology, London.”
