IONS DRIVE WATER. “Swelling is caused by proton pump-driven accumulation in the cytoplasm of K+ and Cl−. This increase in solute concentration lowers water potential inside the cell, and thus drives the entrance of water in the cell. Shrinking is caused by a passive leaking of solutes that is accompanied by water loss. It is currently accepted that the osmotic volume changes of motor cells are analogous to those of stomatal guard cells.”
