GENDER NEUTRAL. “Previous studies examining the prevalence of synesthesia found a significant gender gap with a 6∶1 ratio of female synesthetes to males, leading to the suggestion that synesthesia was an X-linked condition. However, prevalence studies conducted using random sampling have shown an even distribution of synesthesia among the genders, suggesting the discrepancy was based on methodological flaws and self-report biases in earlier studies.” https://lnkd.in/dfc7eju View in LinkedIn

BELL CURVE. “Furthermore, evidence suggests that synesthesia may in fact be a graded phenomenon in the general population, creating the possibility that non-synesthetic relatives of synesthetes show endophenotypes of the condition, complicating the use of family linkage analyses.” https://lnkd.in/dfc7eju View in LinkedIn

SO ENDS this first of two weekends on synesthesia. When you buy a car, in general, the more complicated it is, the more there is that can malfunction. As engines go, the human body is about as complicated as they come, with millions of control points that can malfunction. In this regard, it is surprising that it works at all. It is likely that many functional faults do not let the zygote get beyond the starting blocks, and they simply vanish. View in LinkedIn

STEM CELL CHIMERAS. "Another concern is that the human cells could end up in the brains of the animals. That raises the prospect that "this will somehow give the animal a human consciousness, human mental capabilities.” http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/11/06/454693391/should-human-stem-cells-be-used-to-make-partly-human-chimeras View in LinkedIn

PREVENTABLE WORRY. "Some scientists and bioethicists fear the stem cells could create human eggs and sperm in the animals. To say the least, it's disconcerting to think about two mice making a human embryo...scientists could engineer the cells so that they were unable to form human brain cells, sperm or eggs. The animals could also be isolated or sterilized to prevent them from breeding." http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/11/06/454693391/should-human-stem-cells-be-used-to-make-partly-human-chimeras View in LinkedIn

CHIMERA. "The classical representation of a chimera, such as that described in Homer's Iliad, is a mythical beast bearing the body parts of several different creatures combined into a single animal. The term chimera has a more tangible usage in modern science and medicine, where it indicates organisms comprised of cells from two or more individuals of the same or different species." http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1934590907000860 View in LinkedIn

HUMAN TO LAMB. "The earliest documented xenotransplants into humans used lamb or calf blood and took place in mid 17th century Europe, while the reverse (human into animal) has been practiced as far back as the mid to late 18th century." http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1934590907000860 View in LinkedIn

CHICKEN AND QUAIL. "Hatched chicks with chimeric brains containing cells from both the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) and the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) have been produced by transplantation of various regions of the neural tube at the 8- to 15- somite stage." https://lnkd.in/dZP4TNm View in LinkedIn
