SO ENDS this remarkable essay on the nature of the ether, a concept that simply has not succeeded in being killed. Once consider a type of superstitious fudge factor with roots in alchemy and phlogiston, the idea of space being empty has not been accepted, and redefinitions of the ether idea -- space as sone type of liquid in which things like light and magnetism are propagated -- continue to arise.
