DISEASE ERADICATION has been embraced by many groups for ridding the world of the scourges of infectious and parasitic diseases, and enormous progress has been made in this sector. EMBRYO SCREENING for inherited diseases always provokes the objections of designer babies, which is a shallow code for eugenics. A screening method called karyomapping can screen for genetic defects aneuploidy (abnormal chromosome number) at the same time. AVOIDING GENETIC DISEASE STIRS WRATH. "The technology allows for a woman who has a mitochondrial disease to use another healthy woman’s egg, followed by standard in vitro fertilization, to conceive a healthy baby. EUGENICS RESURRECTED is the battle cry, combined with fear of prejudice against those afflicted with genetic diseases, by ethicists who oppose eradicating genetic diseases.
