MENTORS COUNT for early stage entrepreneurs, and can really make the difference between success and failure, if you choose carefully. Also, with the odds stacked against you (the oft quoted stat that 90% of VC investments fail). if that happens, be prepared. If you have the temperament, get back on that horse and learn from your first mistakes. Write an analysis of what worked and what did not. Share that with a mentor and discuss. ENTREPRENEURS OFTEN HAVE LIMITED DATA POINTS for making key decisions. Large companies famously over-study decisions because they have a tough tine culturally making big decisions without sufficient data. Most startups work at the cutting edge of the world and data usually does not exist to make entireky rational decisions. The MO of startups has to be Hypothesis followed by Controlled Experiment. http://lnkd.in/3_apTz View in LinkedIn

"YOU GET NO MARKS FOR EFFORT" a former colleague used to famously say. Showing up early and staying late will not hit your MBO. Results, however achieved, are all that count. Harsh? Yes but that is the metric you should hold yourself to. Verifiable, measurable successes. That is all that counts, except luck. http://lnkd.in/tkMjKF View in LinkedIn

SMARTS IS NOT ENOUGH: PERSONALITY IS AS IMPORTANT FOR ENTREPRENEURS. The first big hurdle in the maturing process of entrepreneurs is getting the requisite education, although some very exceptional people can sidestep that. But the biggest item that is a deal-breaker is personality. By that I mean ethics, focus, follow-through and ability to relate. Without these, if you do become an entrepreneur, it will be a very bumpy ride. Remember, you can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all of the time. Your personality will reveal itself in your track record. http://lnkd.in/Qad3EG View in LinkedIn

A VALUABLE READ FOR B-SCHOOL ASPIRANTS. Don't also forget that hands-on experience is the most valuable training your can get, if you can get it. "Been there, done that" trumps "I studied it". But however you get your MBA, continue to read and learn as a lifelong habit. http://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/global-mba-ranking-2013 View in LinkedIn

ALL INNOVATIONS GO INTO THE PLANET'S TOOLBOX WITH UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES. Marie Curie - nuclear bombs - advanced cancer treatments; the "information highway" (Al Gore) - distance leaning - new warfare platforms; GPS - map free driving - precision bombing; and so on. It is not possible to anticipate the future uses of any innovation, but the likelihood is it will be both far-reaching and bivalent. Once learned, it is also impossible to take it out of the box. A MUST READ FOR ENTREPRENEURS. 95% of us are not of the right temperament to start companies, and possibly 85% are not of the right temperament to work in them. Think carefully about your wants and needs, and about your personality. Be realistic, because a wrong choice can be both painful and costly. http://lnkd.in/VXJHkS View in LinkedIn
