NETWORKING WITH ACCOMPLISHED PEOPLE can be easy if you ask them for only 20 minutes of their time as an expert in your desired field by phone. Do not ask for a job, just career advice. Do your homework and be prepared. At the end, ask if they can introduce you to somebody else senior in the field to continue your data quest. In my experience, people rarely say no, provided you follow this advice. BIOBANKS are vital to medical advances. In some EC countries, patient privacy laws have confounded the use of highly characterized patient blood, tissue or other samples, for research purposes. This is shortsighted and a big mistake. DO YOU DREAM OF FIXING THE WORLD'S PROBLEMS LIKE BILL GATES? Every entrepreneur is in business because he or she has filled an unmet need, and solved some problem that customers care about. Not all of these save lives, or end poverty. But I am of the opinion that cumulatively, each innovation is another tool in the toolbox. The iPhone did not meet an unmet need, (except fir Hitchhiker's Guide fans) but may have created a need we never knew about. MEASURING OUTCOMES MATTERS as Bill Gates rightly points out in this essay. Measurement is a cornerstone of science. Verifiable and measurable outcomes are also key to the entrepreneurial venture. How do you know your innovation has bern successful? Customers have bought it. That simple. Be eager to find early surrogate or predictive measures of outcomes, such as detailed customer surveys.
