SO ENDS this first of two weekends featuring a summary of new ideas about evolution, that modify Darwin’s original proposal. Thomas Kuhn’s well accepted idea that science progresses by means of modifications of previous ideas, even large paradigm shifts, is everywhere; and no less true for the theory of evolution, born in an age when DNA and genes were not known. Modifications based on new data abound and tweak what still is one of the most important ideas in biology. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2012/aug/19/thomas-kuhn-structure-scientific-revolutions View in LinkedIn

FORMERLY JUNK DNA. “The innovation code that have I proposed, which is assumed to lie in the non-coding DNA, whose reading leads - as we know today - to active microRNAs, a variety of small non-coding RNAs and other ribozymatic structures that have RNA/DNA-text-editing capabilities, gains a new interpretational basis in the framework of the SET.” (SET = Serial Endosymbiotic Theory of Lynn Margulis). https://lnkd.in/e3YfQQZ View in LinkedIn

HORIZONTAL GENE TRANSFER. “Through the union processes of genes of bacterial origin in the sense of SET, entire blocks of genes, and therefore, phenotypically effective characters also become components of such integration processes.” (SET = Serial Endosymbiotic Theory of Lynn Margulis) https://lnkd.in/e3YfQQZ View in LinkedIn

NEW THINKING. “What numerous researchers have always surmised, i.e. that chance mutations could not have brought about the enormous complexity of intracellular processes or this astounding diversity of organisms, has been proven. The arguments of neo-Darwinism, that have vehemently defended this monistic (mutation/selection-) evolution over more than half a century, have lost their validity.” https://lnkd.in/e3YfQQZ View in LinkedIn

DARWINIAN VIEW. “This changes our perception about the function and sense of evolution dramatically: no longer are small steps that involve chance mutations that are responsible for differentiating eukaryotic organismic kingdoms, whose phenotypes are then subject to selection pressure.” https://lnkd.in/e3YfQQZ View in LinkedIn

FIRST BRAINET. "Building an organic computing device with multiple interconnected brains. Recently, we proposed that Brainets, i.e. networks formed by multiple animal brains, cooperating and exchanging information in real time through direct brain-to-brain interfaces, could provide the core of a new type of computing device: an organic computer. Here, we describe the first experimental demonstration of such a Brainet, built by interconnecting four adult rat brains." http://www.nature.com/articles/srep11869 View in LinkedIn

BRAIN NETS. "Then the researchers set the rats to a bunch of different abstract tasks—guessing whether it might rain from temperature and air pressure data, for example, or telling the difference between different kinds of touch-stimuli. The brain collectives always did at least as well on those tests as an individual rat would have, and sometimes even better." http://www.wired.com/2015/07/science-can-learn-wiring-monkey-brains-together/ View in LinkedIn

SENSATE SHARING. "The rat study was even weirder. For this one, the neuroscientists directly wired four rats’ brains together—using the implants to both collect and transmit information about neural activity—so one rat that responded to touch, for example, could pass on their knowledge of that stimulus to another rat." http://www.wired.com/2015/07/science-can-learn-wiring-monkey-brains-together/ View in LinkedIn
