SO ENDS this fragment on the structure of cellular protoplasm, that universal substance across all life forms except viruses and prions. This is the extraordinary gel that is poured from cup to cup across time in the continuum of life. We have come from cells being just a random bag of chemicals to being highly structured molecular ecosystems. It is hard not to be sympathetic with the Vitalists who ascribed uneducable and quasi-magical properties to cells. Given the phenomenon of emergence, that is probably magic enough for us.
