ROGUE SEEDING EXPERIMENTER. If true, this investigation into the fraudulent background of this notorious iron seeding cowboy is, at best, unfortunate. It has fouled the waters for any legitimate scientific iron seeding work. His vessels have apparently been banned in the Galapagos and Canaries for similar nonsense. Much more on the internet if you are interested. " " http://lnkd.in/db82HZBhttp://lnkd.in/dbehQB2 View in LinkedIn

ASIAN CARP EXPERIMENT BLOWS UP as Chicago decided to destroy the fish. "Such a move could cost up to $18bn (£11bn) and cause huge economic disruption to the city." "Cheaper options are also being examined, including making burgers out of the fish and eating them to extinction. They were originally introduced to southern US states more than three decades ago to control algal build-up in sewage treatment plants. But they escaped into the Mississippi River and proliferated, making their way north towards the Great Lakes."" " http://lnkd.in/diQRJyz View in LinkedIn

THE REAL MOTIVE: CASH FOR SALMON PROJECT. " ""George convinced the local council of an indigenous village to establish the Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation to channel more than $1m of its own funds into the project. The president of the Haida nation, Guujaaw, said the village was told the dump would environmentally benefit the ocean, which is crucial to their livelihood and culture. ‘The village people voted to support what they were told was a 'salmon enhancement project'"" " http://www.geog.ucsb.edu/events/department-news/1102/rogue-iron-fertilization-experiment-outrages-scientists/ View in LinkedIn

"WHEN A PLAGUE of tree-climbing aphids afflicted pecan orchards in the southeastern United States in the 1970s, federal biologists released a tree-climbing ladybug from Asia to devour them. The multicolored Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis) did a superb job." Unfortunately, it ate everything and quickly spread across America. Great article with many examples of well-intentioned biological control run amuck. GIANT PHYTOPLANKTON BLOOM SEEN FROM SPACE. "The dump was part of a $2 million bid to drive a surge in salmon populations and is currently under investigation by Environment Canada's enforcement branch." "Russ George allegedly dumped 220,462 pounds (100 tonnes) of iron sulfate into the ocean off the west coast of Britsh Columbia, Canada. Satellite images show the vast plankton bloom from space."" CANE TOAD BIOCONTROL BACKFIRES. "Cane toads were introduced to Australia in 1935 as a biological control method against the Greyback cane beetle that was destroying sugar cane crops. The cane toad is native to South and Central America, and has been used successfully as a biological control against beetles in Hawaii. This method of pest management went horribly wrong in Australia," primarily due to a lack of rigorous biological fitness evaluation for this ecosystem. " " http://lnkd.in/dzExRBN View in LinkedIn

ROGUE EXPERIMENTS."In 2012 Russ George, founder of Planktos, and collaborators conducted an iron fertilization experiment dumping 100 tonnes of iron sulphate into the Pacific Ocean ... which resulted in increased algae growth over 10,000 square miles. Critics allege George's actions violated the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the London convention on the dumping of wastes at sea."" KUDZU: AN EXPERIMENT GONE WRONG. "Kudzu was introduced to the United States in 1876 at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Soil Conservation Service promoted kudzu for erosion control. During the 1940s, he (a Kudzu advocate) traveled across the southeast starting Kudzu Clubs to honor what he called “the miracle vine.” Now that it covers over seven million acres of the deep South, there are a lot of people working hard to get rid of it."" RECENT IRON SEEDING TRIALS. "Since 1993, thirteen international research teams have completed ocean trials demonstrating that phytoplankton blooms can be stimulated by iron addition. The most recent open ocean trials of ocean iron fertilization were in 2009 (January to March) in the South Atlantic by project LOHAFEX, and in July 2012 in the North Pacific off the coast of British Columbia, Canada, by the Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation.""
