FORTY DAY PAIN RELIEF. “CRISPR-based gene therapy dampens pain in mice. Targeted approach could lead to an opioid-free way of treating chronic pain.” https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00644-5?utm_source=Nature+Briefing&utm_campaign=09b55fc449-briefing-dy-20210319&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c9dfd39373-09b55fc449-46028450 View in LinkedIn

SO ENDS this last of two weekends looking EO Wilson’s eusocial ants. “As the worker ants lack the means of reproduction that humans are usually innately born with, they are coerced by the ruling ant-queen class in order to survive as a colony, and a species. Individual ants cannot reproduce without a queen and are exploited by them as such. Humans, while we do possess reproductive independence, have been violently, historically and exploited by the ruling class, our bosses. Individual human beings cannot live without a job, and bosses exploit us as such. They hold the means of production that we need in order to survive in this world as an individual, as a family, or as a species. We are not ants. We will overcome the most horrific socioeconomic…

AN INSECT CASE. “Finally, it needs to be added that the explanation of the origin and evolution of eusocial colonial life advanced here is meant to apply only to nonhuman animal species, and insects in particular. Human social behavior arose with different preadaptations, and may have been driven by a very different pattern of fundamental selection forces. (Or it may not have been so driven.).” https://lnkd.in/drgWvGT View in LinkedIn

KIN SELECTION THEORY. “Its abstract parameters can be jury-rigged to fit any set of empirical data, but not built to predict them in any detail, nor have they been able to guide, with a few exceptions, research in profitable new directions. If good theory rests on the three-legged stool of generality, precision, and realism, kin selection theory is strong on the first of these qualities but ineffectually weak on the last two.” https://lnkd.in/drgWvGT View in LinkedIn

FALSE CONCLUSIONS. “It is often said in research reports on social insects that some particular set of empirical data is “consistent with kin selection theory.” But the same can be said of almost any other imaginable result, and the particular connection of data to the theory remains unclear. Hence, kin selection theory is not wrong. It is instead constructed to arrive at almost any imaginable result, and as a result is largely empty of content.” https://lnkd.in/drgWvGT View in LinkedIn

ORIGIN OF EUSOCIALITY. “Overall, the weight of empirical evidence leans toward, but does not definitively prove, the following proposition: while close pedigree kinship among group members inevitably accompanies the origin and early evolution of eusociality, the association is a by-product of preadaptation and not a causative condition. Two conditions working together, key preadaptations and strong proportionate group selection, are from the evidence necessary and sufficient for eusociality. Close genetic relatedness and collateral kin selection are not necessary.” https://lnkd.in/drgWvGT View in LinkedIn

NULL ORIGIN OF EUSOCIALITY. “In summary, the known background biology of the eusocial insects, in particular the hymenopterans, gives no reason to presuppose that pedigree kinship is a key causative element in the origin and early evolution of eusociality.” https://lnkd.in/drgWvGT View in LinkedIn

HIGHER ORGANIZING PRINCIPLES. “The candidate organizing concepts include self-organization, energy landscapes, chemical motors that supply energy, and above all, evolution and replication – as biological systems are often far from equilibrium. Their study is made even more difficult because evolution has fine tuned earlier organizing principles. Thus, what we can observe is often the remnants of many interacting evolutionary processes.” (Santa Fe Institute on vestigial evolutionary systems). https://lnkd.in/d-PcKak View in LinkedIn

BLACK HOLE INFLUENCE. “One of the outstanding issues for understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies is how the presence of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) affects its host galaxy. Observations have shown that the growth of SMBHs is tightly linked with their host galaxies, as revealed by correlations between the black hole mass and the bulge stellar mass.” (SMBH = supermassive black hole). https://lnkd.in/dsQ34Hf View in LinkedIn
