NOT WORRISOME AND SLANTED STUDY. "The findings reflected “very low levels of arsenic,” and were not worrisome. "These samples, taken as part of this extremely small, agenda-driven study, were purchased before roxarsone was removed from the market in June 2011, and the conclusions are used to intentionally mislead consumers,” said ... the National Chicken Council." http://lnkd.in/dHt3ydp View in LinkedIn

POLICY DOCUMENT ON HGT by the Organization for Economic Development (OECD), representing 33 member countries including USA, Europe, Asia and the Pacific to arrive at a consensus view on hot topics. With the hot button being antibiotic marker genes in GMOs and the strong differences in viewpoints, it is not surprising this was a watered-down document. http://lnkd.in/dxSwnaG View in LinkedIn

INCREASED ARSENIC IN CHICKEN LIVERS. "The levels were well below danger levels set in federal safety standards, though the researchers pointed out that those were first established in the 1940s. And the chicken samples tested were from 2010 and 2011, before sales of the drug that researchers say was a major driver of the elevated arsenic levels, roxarsone, were suspended." http://lnkd.in/dHt3ydp View in LinkedIn

"HORIZONTAL GENE TRANSFER (HGT) is the primary reason for bacterial antibiotic resistance, and plays an important role in the evolution of bacteria that can degrade novel compounds such as human-created pesticides and in the evolution, maintenance, and transmission of virulence." http://lnkd.in/dm2dpWP View in LinkedIn

140 CHICKEN SAMPLES IN 10 US CITIES (2013). "Chicken contained inorganic arsenic at the level of about two parts per billion. Organic chicken ... contained about half a part per billion. Federal standards allow anything below 500 parts per billion ... could cause an additional 124 deaths in the country annually from lung and bladder cancer, if the drug were fed to all chickens." http://lnkd.in/dHt3ydp View in LinkedIn

HORIZONTAL GENE TRANSFER in bacteria is a key reason for the promiscuous spread of traits like antibiotic resistance. This genetic mechanism amplifies the presence of these genes in the bacterial gene pool and can introduce them into the food chain. These genes have even been found in deep and very isolated cave habitats. Since bacteria are everywhere, this is probably of lesser surprise. View in LinkedIn

ROXARSONE "contains organic arsenic, which is far less toxic than its inorganic counterpart. For decades, it was believed that animals simply excreted organic arsenic. But evidence is emerging that it may also be converted into its carcinogenic cousin in the body of the chicken." What sort of safety testing failed to evaluate this obvious concern? http://lnkd.in/dHt3ydp View in LinkedIn

FDA POWERLESS IN FACE OF FOOD INDUSTRY. "The FDA has long held -- since 1977 in fact -- that administering low doses of antibiotics to livestock, as is common among Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), was inappropriate, yet they continue to pander to the drug industry and are allowing the practice to continue." http://lnkd.in/dQReGiz View in LinkedIn

2006 ARSENIC IN CHICKEN STUDY describes a feeding program that has gone in for decades, despite the USDA's own data of 3-4 times higher arsenic levels in chicken meat than other meat from 5,000 samples from 1993-2000. The 2006 study found considerable arsenic variation by brand, but it was widespread, and an unnecessary risk to public health. http://lnkd.in/d8MJHr9 View in LinkedIn
