CELLULAR SUICIDE. "Apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death (PCD), is a genetically regulated active physiological process of cell suicide that causes cell deletion without inflammation, scarring, or release of cellular contents. Mitochondria of living cells play a pivotal role in controlling life and death." https://lnkd.in/eUWbyuT View in LinkedIn

LIMBO. "The term mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) is commonly used to indicate an abrupt increase in the permeability of the inner mitochondrial membrane to low molecular weight solutes. Widespread MPT has catastrophic consequences for the cell, de facto marking the boundary between cellular life and death." https://lnkd.in/eyXYjxQ View in LinkedIn

"APOPTOSIS and necrosis would be two extremes of a continuum of possible types of cell demise, whose shape and implications for the neighboring tissue would be decided by the availability of ATP, and likely by additional factors in the dying cell and in scavenger cells. This would explain the frequent coexistence of both types of cell death in pathological situations...where individual cell death within the tissue would be decided by the energy supply." https://lnkd.in/e3cRBYE View in LinkedIn

"PHOTOSYNTHESIS provides energy for almost all life on Earth. This energy, in the form of photons, is absorbed by light-harvesting antennas as an electronic excitation. This excitation is then transported from each antenna to a reaction centre where charge separation creates more stable forms of chemical energy." https://lnkd.in/eRUdQZj View in LinkedIn

SOME ANCIENT microorganisms have learned to borrow their ATP. "E. cuniculi also uses these proteins to steal ATP from its eukaryotic host to sustain its lifestyle as an obligate intracellular parasite. Here we show that, consistent with this hypothesis, all four E. cuniculi transporters can transport ATP, and three of them are expressed on the surface of the parasite when it is living inside host cells." https://lnkd.in/eA9SjDZ View in LinkedIn
